#36 Master of None: The Path to Becoming a Creative Generalist
A wide range of skills and experience is always an obvious asset to reflect on a resume. What if you could make a legitimate career out of that record?
Hello,
Welcome to The Book People, a weekly newsletter on the business of media and storytelling.
If you’ve been hired for an internship or entry-level role, and done every task under the sun – from content writing to database management – then congratulations, there is a new term for you! A generalist is an individual with a general yet credible sense of many skills instead of having expertise in only one.
A generalist could be a visual communicator who excels at graphic design and also has an eye for good copy, or a traditional salesperson with a natural knack for social media trends. What’s common between these two examples is an individual’s ability to acquire a skill that complements their expertise, opening up more avenues for employment and career growth.
As of 2023, the Global Culture Report suggested that 52% of existing employees consider themselves generalists at heart.
In a world grappling with the weight of AI, a generalist is a professional with the confidence to keep up with the uncertainty of automation, and the certainty to acquire any skill the situation might demand. This is so as they have probably learned a new hobby a couple of times already.
Though some may criticize the practice of hiring one ‘generalist’ to do the job of three employees, reports have suggested that many employees like the challenges that come with taking up multiple roles, ensuring they don’t get bored and continue to innovate, take risks, and acquire new skills.
With more employees taking up the generalist path, the range of opportunities for individuals looking to monetize their creative abilities is bound to expand. This trend could also lead to a shift in the way we perceive traditional career trajectories, with room to change industries and grow each skill set a lot more.
Many creative professionals tend to balance multiple responsibilities at their jobs without acknowledging the skills they have acquired while doing so. Well, now is the time to make a note of every task you’ve done and term yourself a jack of all trades, better than a master of one.
